Hi! I'm Michelle Clark. I live in Campbell (a small suburb of San Jose) with my new husband (just about to hit the 1-yr mark in February) and our 2 kitties. This is my third year in the SLIS program at SJSU. I'm on the "slow track" and only attending half-time, since I work full-time as a Production Project Manager with Cengage Learning (a college-textbook publisher). I honestly have no library experience, other than visiting my local library from time to time. I am still not entirely sure what I would like to do with my MLIS degree, but I do know that I have been thoroughly enjoying the classes I've taken so far and all the wonderful people I have met in this program. Along with LIBR 246, I am also taking LIBR 285 (Historical Research Methods) this spring.
My hopes for this class is simply to learn more about the various Web 2.0 and online social tools and how they can be implemented to enhance the online user experience for a library. I think that having a strong presence online is essential nowadays and especially, for me, being in Silicon Valley, almost a given. I am often shocked at how little libraries are devoting to building an online space for their library and/or collection, although I certainly understand the budget and time retraints. However, considering the majority of online social tools are now free and easy enough to implement for the most basic Internet user, it's becoming more and more difficult to rely on such excuses. I'm also interested in learning about many of these tools for my own personal use, as well. While I consider myself an avid Internet user, I certainly don't know everything and I am always willing to learn more!
